Thomas Johnston Visits Relatives in Philadelphia (Pg 2)

In July 1860, Abraham Lincoln, was campaigning for the presidency in Springfield, IL. C.H. Brainard, a Boston lithograph publisher, hired Thomas Murphy Jerome Johnston, a noted Boston portrait artist and son of David Claypoole Johnston, to go to Springfield, IL to complete a portrait of Lincoln. On his way, Thomas wrote a letter to his father describing his stopover in New York City and arrival in Philadelphia. His father was a Philadelphia native and it appears there were numerous relatives to visit there. It is this particular letter, found in David Claypoole Johnston’s attic 120 years later that provided the first clue to my generation that D.C. Johnston, our great, great grandfather, was not an only child.
