 | John W. & Mary (Johnston) Cartwright Home - Revere, MA Status: Located. John W. Cartwright and his wife Mary P. (Johnston) Cartwright moved into this Florence Avenue home overlooking the harbor about 1872. There were more children and John had recently been elected president of one of Boston's larger insurance companies. The purchase date is based on the fact that John would not have been in a position to buy the property after his insurance company went bankrupt as a result of the great Boston fire of November 1872.
It was still owned by the John (now a widower) in 1878 when a plot plan of the North Shore Land Company property identified this site as "Lot 56 - not available for sale" and handwritten notes on the plan identify John Cartwright as the owner. Lot 56 is about where 70 Florence Street is currently located.
It was sold about 1879 due to John's financial misfortunes and the untimely death of his wife Mary in 1878. The children were "farmed out" to relatives about this time.
Note the large connected barn to the left and the well and pitcher pump in the foreground likely used when horses were grazed in the field. |
