 | Albion (1861) Status: LocatedALBION 1861 / ALBANO 1880
The Albion was a 900 gross ton ship, length 245ft, beam 29ft, iron hull, with a clipper bow. There was accommodation for 24-1st, 16-2nd and 365-steerage class passengers. The ship was launched in February 1861 and used in the lucrative Atlantic crossing trade carrying passengers fleeing from the potato famine in Ireland and the harsh economic conditions in England. It was this ship that carried Denis Donovan, his wife Margaret and daughter Catherine in steerage to America arriving in New York City on April 28, 1862.
In 1880, the Albion was renamed the Albano. In September 1897, the ship was wrecked in the Gulf of Bothnia near Kemi, Finland while on a passage between Trelleborg and Neder Kalix in ballast.
