The Taylor Iron & Steel Company in High Bridge, NJ was founded by William Allen & Joseph Turner of Philadelphia in 1742 as the Union Iron Works. In 1769, Robert Taylor, an Irish immigrant, became Works Manager and in 1803 he purchased a controlling interest. Robert Taylor and his direct descendants then managed the firm through 1922 when his 3rd great grandson Knox Taylor died. The High Bridge plant was finally closed in 1970. |
